Socso Screening Appointments Deferred As Foreign Construction And Security Workers Now Targeted

Socso’s Prihatin Screening Programme (PSP) now focuses on foreign workers in construction and security services in KL and Selangor.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 — The Social Security Organisation’s (Socso) Covid-19 screening programme will focus on migrant workers in the construction and security sectors in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor starting today.

Human Resources Minister M. Saravanan said Socso’s Prihatin Screening Programme (PSP) is for employers or workers who have registered with Socso under the Employee’s Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4).

The screening process will be carried out based on appointments arranged between companies and the appointed PSP service providers.

The coronavirus tests can be done either at the workplace or at the premises of the service providers. Mobile screening services are allowed too.

“Accordingly, all appointments with service providers made prior to this announcement are deferred until further notice,” said Saravanan in a statement.

“This announcement is in accordance with the government’s latest directive to emphasise the Covid-19 screening for foreign workers in both sectors. It is also in line with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health to undertake targeted screening at workers who are considered to be at high risk,” he added.

The minister’s statement came after PSP’s sole service provider — laboratory company BP Healthcare — was reportedly inundated with customers, forcing testing to even be done outside the premises in public walkways. Only 10 BP diagnostic centres in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have been authorised by Socso for Covid-19 testing.

Health authorities have previously detected coronavirus clusters among migrant construction workers and security guards.
