KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — The 204 Covid-19 cases among Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) vaccination staff cannot yet be identified as a “cluster” without evidence that each had infected the other at the inoculation centre, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.
Vaccine Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said Tuesday that the 204 infections among the 453 staff at the IDCC vaccination site (PPV) in Shah Alam, Selangor — all of which were mild or asymptomatic and had low viral loads — were detected in a mass testing exercise undertaken after two volunteers first tested positive for the virus.
About 88 per cent of the staff, or 400 personnel, have been vaccinated, Khairy said, without specifying if they were partially or fully inoculated.
“Our public health action now is to investigate the source of infection,” Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham told a press conference today by the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) Greater Klang Valley Task Force.
“We may look at the epidemiological link between one case and another before we call it a cluster.”
The Klang Valley’s public health care system, including contact tracing capabilities, however is currently under tremendous strain, as thousands of new Covid-19 cases are detected daily, including more than 4,000 new infections every day in Selangor since July 8.
Today, Selangor reported a record high 6,120 coronavirus cases, comprising nearly half of the nation’s 24-hour high of 13,215 new infections.
