SSB Tax Fails To Cut Sugary Drinks Consumption: ISIS Malaysia

ISIS Malaysia says the SSB tax, a volumetric tax system, is largely ineffective in reducing sugary drinks consumption, with a 10% increase in SSB tax reducing purchases by only less than 2%. ISIS also recommends expanding the SSB tax to condensed milk.

Parliament Committee Calls For Milk Subsidy Over Sugar Subsidy To Tackle Child Stunting

The Women, Children and Community Development PSSC calls for targeted milk subsidies to prevent child stunting, citing no support for milk despite RM500 million annual sugar subsidies. MOH recommends 500ml daily intake for children aged two to five.

KPDN Minister Armizan Mohd Ali says savings from any sugar subsidy abolition should remain with KPDN for cost-of-living programmes, adding that subsidy removal must be gradual to avoid price shocks. KPDN and MOF are reviewing sugar incentives and prices.

MMA suggests raising public health care registration fees from RM1 to RM5 for primary care and RM5 to RM25 for specialist outpatient care, but to continue exemption for B40. MMA also wants a raise in doctors' on-call allowance to RM25/hour in Budget 2026.
