APHM says private hospital charges can't be regulated, as factors influencing health care costs are complex and vary by geographical location. At the same time, APHM says health insurance copayments burden patients and may discourage them from seeking care.

Life Insurance Association of Malaysia, defending BNM-mandated co-payments in new health insurance products, says over 90% of every premium dollar goes towards paying claims. "The existing 100% coverage plans and high claims inflation are not sustainable."

Bank Negara: Insurers To Set Health Insurance Co-Payment Caps

Bank Negara said today it is up to insurers to set the maximum cap on co-payments in health insurance; minimum is 5%. BNM also said the premium for MHIT products with co-payment features is 19%-68% lower than those without, depending on co-payment level.

Government Doctors Propose Diabetic ‘Fee’, Co-Payments, Sugary Drinks Tax Raise

A government endocrinologist suggests imposing fees on diabetes patients, eg: RM100 a year, to motivate Malaysians to be healthier; the money can be used by MOH to fund better diabetes drugs, glucose monitoring, and lifestyle intervention programmes.

Restrictive Madani Medical Scheme Underfunded, GPs Moot Co-Payments

FPMPAM and MPCAM want a co-payment model in the Madani Medical Scheme, which they say is underfunded, to enable GPs and patients to make their own decisions on care. Doctor groups also complain about excessive paperwork that discourages GPs from joining.

MMA urges the government to allow willing patients to make co-payments under the Madani Medical Scheme, as the combined consultation & med limit per visit is only RM70. MMA also wants ProtectHealth listed in MOH's TPA registry if the company is a TPA.
