KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — Runner and cancer advocate SG Lim arrived at the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) headquarters yesterday as part of his 2,200 km nationwide Run for Gold campaign, bringing with him not only a message of hope for cancer patients but also the symbolic Relay for Life torch that has become a beacon of solidarity in the fight against cancer.
The Kuala Lumpur stop, held in conjunction with NCSM’s 60th Anniversary Wellness Weekend, marked one of the final stages of Lim’s remarkable journey across Malaysia.
Accompanied by a group of dedicated runners, he was flagged off from the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent headquarters before making his way to NCSM, where approximately over 1,000 participants joined him along the route in a vibrant show of support for cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and families.
Driven by the memory of his late wife, Joo Lee, who passed away from cancer, the 66-year old Penang-born runner embarked on the Run for Gold campaign on March 28, 2026, from the NCSM-MBPP Home of Hope in Penang.
Since then, he has covered an impressive 1,781 kilometres, traversing towns and cities across the country while raising awareness of the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and community support.
A key highlight of the Kuala Lumpur stop was the continuation of the Relay For Life torch relay. The torch, which Lim carried throughout this leg of his journey, symbolises hope, resilience, remembrance, and the collective commitment to supporting those affected by cancer.
Upon arriving at NCSM, Lim formally handed over the torch to deputy health minister Hajjah Hanifah Hajar Taib, signifying the continued partnership between civil society, health care stakeholders, policymakers, and the wider community in advancing the fight against cancer.
Speaking at the event, Lim said the journey has always been about more than running. “Every step and every kilometre is dedicated to those who have faced cancer, those currently battling the disease, and the loved ones who stand beside them.
“Carrying the Relay For Life torch makes this journey even more meaningful because it represents the hope that continues to shine despite the challenges cancer brings,” he said.
The arrival at NCSM held special significance, given the organisation’s six decades of service to cancer patients and their families. Through initiatives such as its children’s and adults’ Home of Hope facilities in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Perak, NCSM continues to provide essential accommodation and support services for patients who must travel away from home to receive treatment.
Dr Murallitharan Munisamy, managing director of NCSM, praised SG Lim’s dedication and the powerful message behind the Run for Gold campaign.
“SG Lim’s extraordinary journey embodies the spirit of Relay For Life, celebrating survivors, remembering loved ones, and fighting back against cancer.
“His commitment has inspired thousands of Malaysians and reinforces the importance of community support in ensuring that no one faces cancer alone,” he said.
Supported by media partners Fly FM, KOOL FM, SAYS, and The Vocket, Run for Gold continues to unite Malaysians from all walks of life behind a common cause.
As SG Lim enters the final stages of his nationwide journey, his run stands as a testament to perseverance, compassion, and the enduring hope that drives the cancer community forward.
