Coronavirus Global Death Toll Exceeds 2,200

South Korea reported a surge of new Covid-19 cases.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 — The death toll in mainland China from the novel coronavirus has reached at least 2,236, plus 11 deaths outside the country, making the global death toll at least 2,247.

CNN reported that Japan has reported three fatalities from Covid-19, and two each in Hong Kong and Iran. One death was reported each in Taiwan, the Philippines, South Korea, and France.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus infections in mainland China is now 75,465, with the global total hitting 76,691.

Coronavirus cases in South Korea soared by 52 new infections in just one day, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 156. South Korea and Japan, according to CNN, have the highest number of Covid-19 cases outside mainland China.

Two Japanese who died from Covid-19, a man and woman both reportedly in their 80s, were among at least 626 passengers who contracted the viral infection while aboard the Diamond Princess cruise liner, The Washington Post reported. The ship was reportedly quarantined at a dock in Yokohama for over a fortnight.

CNN reported that several passengers from the Diamond Princess who were evacuated by the United States and Australia tested positive for Covid-19, including 11 in the US and two Australians.
