KUALA LUMPUR, August 29 — The Melaka state government has defended its move to recruit the services of a non-profit led by a former sex worker and a drug user for an anti-drug campaign.
The Star reported Melaka state health and anti-drug committee chairman Low Chee Leong as saying the state government was not in the “erotica” business, as he defended Sinar Sofia Welfare Association that is led by Rosli Ismail, a former drug user, and his wife Rahayu, a former sex worker.
“There’s nothing ‘dirty’ about engaging an ex-prostitute and a drug addict who has repented to tell people about how risky it is to be an addict and how this could lead to other immoral activities,” Low was quoted saying.
Sinar Sofia Welfare Association is a non-profit that seeks to create awareness on HIV among drug users and sex workers.
