KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 – Pantai Hospital Sungai Petani has apologised for a racist advertisement that stated a preference for Chinese, Siamese, Christian and Indian applicants in its scholarship offer for students taking a diploma in nursing.
The private hospital in Kedah said its banner featuring the advertisement was put up by a staff without approval and did not reflect the company’s values.
“At Pantai Hospitals, we embrace a fair employment policy and we do not condone any practices that are prejudicial against any race or religion. We sincerely apologise for the distress caused.” Pantai Hospital Sungai Petani said last night.
The private hospital had also purportedly posted the racist advertisement on its Facebook page on February 8, according to screenshots other people posted on social media. The Facebook post is no longer visible on Pantai Hospital Sungai Petani’s Facebook page.
Instead, a new advertisement on the scholarships offered by both Pantai Hospital Sungai Petani and Amanjaya Specialist Centre now states a requirement for students to be fluent in English and Bahasa Malaysia, while an “ability to speak in Mandarin/ Tamil or other languages is an added advantage.”
Angry people have called for a boycott of Pantai Hospital.
