KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 — A Cabinet committee today reviewed a proposal to establish a National Ruminant Board and enact legislation to coordinate food security policies across agencies and ministries.
The Cabinet Committee Meeting on the National Food Security Policy (JKKMN) No. 2/2025 last Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, reviewed strategies to enhance the self-sufficiency of the national livestock sector through the proposed establishment of the National Ruminant Board.
This followed findings of the Feasibility Study Report on the Establishment of the National Ruminant Board by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi).
“The government is finalising a new policy to address the increasingly complex challenges of food security through an integrated, evidence-based, and mission-driven approach,” said Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu in a statement today.
“This policy aims to improve the efficiency of agricultural and agri-food production, ensure the sustainability of food systems, strengthen regional food diplomacy, promote healthy eating habits, and drive inclusive economic growth.”
To ensure effective implementation, the policy will be supported by specific legislation that coordinates actions among various agencies and ministries to strengthen governance for national food sustainability and security as a whole.
Policy planning will continue to be enhanced through the Integrated Agricultural Statistics Digital System (Tanistats) initiative, aimed at strengthening national food security through national agricultural data sharing to drive agricultural sector growth.

According to the Draft NFSB 2030 by the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM), Malaysia mainly imports food (rice, frozen meat, fruits, and vegetables), seeds, fertilisers and pesticides, feedstuff.
