Nearly 15% Of Klang Valley Adults Boosted Against Covid-19

Sarawak, Putrajaya, KL, Melaka, Labuan, and Negeri Sembilan exceeded the 12% national average of Covid-19 adult booster vaccination coverage as of Dec 3.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 — Sarawak, the central region of Malaysia, and Labuan have reported the highest Covid-19 booster vaccine coverage among adults, exceeding the 12 per cent national average.

Klang Valley reported 14.4 per cent Covid-19 booster vaccine coverage among the adult population as of December 3. Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, and Selangor individually are at 25.8 per cent, 23.3 per cent and 11.8 per cent respectively.

This places Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur as the second and third federal territories with the highest Covid-19 booster vaccine coverage among adults, just after Sarawak in first place with 35.8 per cent of adults having received additional shots.

About 17.6 per cent of adults in Melaka, 17.2 per cent of adults in Labuan, and 15.8 per cent of adults in Negeri Sembilan have received extra Covid-19 vaccine doses.

All other states recorded coronavirus booster coverage at less than 10 per cent of adults, with Sabah coming in last at about 5 per cent.

Highest Sinovac Coverage In Penang

The highest Sinovac booster vaccine coverage is in Penang, comprising about 11.5 per cent of additional Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the state.

This was followed by Sabah (10.8 per cent) and Kuala Lumpur (6.6 per cent), as of December 3.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine comprised 94.8 per cent, or about 2.7 million of some 2.8 million Covid-19 booster doses administered so far nationwide.

This is the same case for each individual state as the proportion of Pfizer booster coverage ranges from the lowest of 86.9 per cent in Penang and highest in Labuan at 98.2 per cent.

This is because while the public is urged to take whatever vaccine available for their booster shots, the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force’s (CITF) preferred booster vaccine brand is Pfizer-BioNTech’s mRNA jab.

This is mainly due to data on Pfizer so far showing the best suitability for Covid-19 boosters.

The second most frequently used Covid-19 booster vaccine brand is Sinovac, of which 98,553 doses have been administered across the country. The inactivated vaccine comprises 3.5 per cent of total additional Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationwide.

AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, and CanSino on the other hand only totalled 0.16 per cent of all Covid-19 booster doses administered nationwide.

Covid-19 booster vaccines have been opened to all adults aged 18 and above, with appointments offered to older people earlier.
