Global Covid-19 Infections Now More Than Four Million

Many countries are testing only the most serious cases.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 — According to Johns Hopkins University, there are now 4.02 million confirmed cases of Covid-19 around the world. The number of deaths globally is now at least 279,329 people. Cases are rising rapidly in Brazil and Russia.

The United States is the worst-hit country with more than 1.3 million cases and more than 78,000 deaths. Europe is the hardest-hit continent with more than 1.7 million infections and 155,000 fatalities.

South Korea today reported 34 new cases of coronavirus, the latest spike in figures is the highest daily tally in a month. For the past 10 days, the country had been reporting zero to very few domestic cases. This outbreak is centred around an index case who visited several night clubs in Seoul’s Itaewon entertainment district. He was later found to be positive for the coronavirus.

The latest data from Brazil show there were 155,939 confirmed infections in the country. However, because of low testing, the actual rate could be 15 to 20 per cent higher.
