KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 — The Indonesian government today announced that there are 387 new confirmed cases of Covid-19. This brings the total number of reported infections in the country of 267 million to 14,032.

The Ministry of Health’s disease control and prevention director general, Achmad Yurianto also stated that the total number of patients who had recovered also increased to 2,698. The number of official fatalities rose to 973 after 16 individuals died of the coronavirus.

According to Achmad, more than 113,452 people had already been tested across the country. Nevertheless, Saturday at 533 cases brought about the highest number of daily increase in new cases so far.

The epidemic now encompasses all of Indonesia’s 34 provinces with Jakarta alone having 5,190 cases. The official number of persons who have died of the virus at 930 is the highest in Southeast Asia.

However, according to a recent Channel News Asia report, Indonesia is already considering easing on the imposed restrictions with an exit strategy intended to reopen the economy. This could happen as soon as June 1.

The Minister of Coordinating Human Development and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy was reported by Jakarta Post to have said that Indonesia only had a moderate number of cases compared to other ASEAN countries.

“We’re on the right track. There is a decreasing trend of cases, though not dramatically. I thank all the people who have complied with the government’s Covid-19 precautionary measures.”
