KUALA LUMPUR, May 17 — The Kuching teenager who allegedly killed herself after an Instagram poll supported her choice to die was suspected of suffering from depression, police said.

Bernama reported Padawan district police deputy chief DSP Mervin Lisa as saying that the mother of the 16-year-old girl, known as Davia Emelia, did not see any behavioural change in her daughter before the latter’s death.

“According to her mother, the victim was close to her stepfather but since the stepfather married a Vietnamese woman, he rarely returned to Kuching to meet the victim. It caused the victim to feel sad,” he told Bernama.

Mervin reportedly said the police have obtained statements from Emelia’s school and close friends.

The girl allegedly killed herself Monday night in Batu Kawa, Kuching, five hours after running an Instagram poll where she asked her followers to help her choose between death and life, using the initials “D” and “L”. Over two-thirds, or 69 per cent, reportedly voted “D”.
