Sarawak Declares 62nd Rabies-Infected Area

The rabies outbreak in Sarawak has left 16 dead and is now a Level II disaster.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 — Sarawak today declared Kampung Tambirat in Asajaya as the 62nd rabies-infected area in the state.

The Star Online reported that Deputy Chief Minister Amar Douglas Uggah Embas made the decision in his capacity as Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee chairman.

“As the area is outside the 10km radius of any area previously declared as rabies-infected, this area becomes the 62nd to be declared so.

“The people are advised not to allow their pet dogs to roam freely or to move the animals out of the area without the written permission of the State Veterinary Authority,” he was quoted saying in a statement.

Borneo Post reported that the rabies outbreak in Sarawak, which has killed 16 people since July 2017, has been declared a Level II disaster.
