In new cases of sexually transmitted illnesses reported in Malaysia in 2022, adolescents aged under 21 years comprised the following: gonorrhoea (22.4%) , HIV (7%) , syphilis (6.7%) , and Hepatitis C (1.4%) .
MOH's NHMS 2022 survey shows that one-third of Malaysian teens aged 13 to 17 who have ever had sex engaged in sexual activity before turning 14. Three quarters are sexually active, 88% don't use condoms/ any birth control, and 11% have multiple sexual partners. The age of consent for sex is 16.
Advocates should push political parties and election candidates to address various health issues in GE15 election manifestos, like health care financing, social and aged care, access to abortion, NCDs, tobacco control, HIV/AIDS, and pandemic preparedness.
