After Meeting Philip Morris, FT Mufti Office Explores Fatwa For Shariah-Compliant Tobacco Alternatives

The FT Mufti's Office says it's looking at the role of productive fatwas for "Shariah-compliant" alternatives to conventional cigarettes, after receiving a visit from Philip Morris Malaysia. Currently, smoking (including e-cigarettes) is considered haram.

GATS Malaysia Survey Proves Vape Availability Doesn’t Cut Tobacco Smoking

The 2023 GATS Malaysia survey proves that vape availability does not cut tobacco smoking. Current tobacco smoking prevalence dropped only 4 points to 19% in 2023 from 23.1% in 2011, but dual tobacco/ e-cig users rose to 3.9%. Vape prevalence surged 600%.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak proposes a generational ban on cigarettes in England for those born from 2009. He also pledges to restrict the availability of vapes to children by looking at flavours, packaging, point-of-sale displays, and disposable vapes.

The Control of Tobacco Product and Smoking Bill 2022 criminalises the purchase, possession, and use of cigarettes or vape, or smoking/ vaping, by individuals born from Jan 1, 2007 -- aged 15 or below today -- with a max RM5,000 fine/ max RM2,500 compound.
