KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 — Malaysia reported 18 casualties due to Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the highest daily record, bringing the death toll to 660.
Out of the 18 people who died from Covid-19, four of them were brought in dead to the hospital, which means that they perished before they could seek medical treatment.
Those four were an 85-year-old man with hypertension, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and chronic obstructive airway disease in Kinabatangan, Sabah; a 32-year-old man with diabetes and hypertension, and a 40-year-old man with diabetes in Klang, Selangor; as well as an 82-year-old man with no underlying conditions in Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor.
Seventeen of the Covid-19 victims were Malaysians, while one was a non-Malaysian. Eleven of them were males and seven were females.
A total of 15 of them had underlying conditions, and only three had no comorbidities.
Malaysia’s average daily cases have increased by about 2.5 times to 3,587 daily cases in the week of January 16 to January 22 (3,587 cases), from 1,439 daily cases in the week of December 5 to December 11.
The average daily cases did not increase significantly between December 5 to December 25. It increased by 4.3 per cent from 1,439 cases between December 5 and December 11, to 1,501 cases between December 12 and December 18. Average daily infections subsequently rose by 2.3 per cent from that week to the next week of December 19 to December 25.
However, after that, there was a significant 25.7 per cent increase to an average of 1,930 cases between December 26 and January 1.
From December 26 to January 1, the average daily cases then increased by 18.6 per cent to 2,290 cases between January 2 and January 8. Average daily infections then increased by 24.5 per cent to 2,851 cases between January 9 to January 15.
The rapid increase in the average daily Covid-19 cases since December 25 could be due to the implementation of mandatory Covid-19 screening for all foreign workers from January 1.
CodeBlue reported today that Malaysia is the top 20th country in the world with the highest rate of increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, higher than all ASEAN countries except for Thailand. Malaysia took 38 days to double its total confirmed coronavirus cases from 83,475 cumulative infections on December 13 last year to 169,379 total cases on January 20, 2021.
National Covid-19 Highlights
A total of 3,631 new coronavirus infections were reported today, pushing the cumulative cases to 176,180.
The highest number of cases was reported in Selangor (782 cases), followed by Sabah (453 cases), and Kuala Lumpur (435 cases).
Other states that reported positive Covid-19 cases included Johor (466 cases), Negeri Sembilan (197 cases), Penang (202 cases), Perak (138 cases), Kedah (166 cases), Sarawak (229 cases), Kelantan (161 cases), Melaka (82 cases), Pahang (61 cases), Labuan (29 cases), Terengganu (178 cases), Putrajaya (39 cases), and Perlis (13 cases).
Malaysia now has 42,814 active Covid-19 infections, including 251 of them in the intensive care unit, among which 102 patients are on ventilator support.
