MOH Probes Alleged Medical Negligence In IUCD Insertion

JKN Johor says an investigation committee has been formed to probe a patient’s complaint about medical negligence over an IUCD insertion by a medical officer at a health clinic that reportedly ruptured her womb and appendix, and injured her intestines.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 — The Ministry of Health (MOH) has launched an internal investigation into a doctor’s alleged medical negligence in the insertion of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUDC) into a patient.

Johor state health director Dr Mohtar Pungut said the female patient filed a complaint through the Sispaa channel last December 23, following her IUCD insertion procedure that was carried out by a medical officer on December 19 at Klinik Kesihatan Pekan Nanas in Pontian.

The patient was referred to the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at Sultanah Aminah Hospital Johor Bahru (HSAJB) for further treatment and ongoing monitoring after experiencing complications, according to the Johor state health department.

“JKNJ views this incident seriously. Accordingly, an Investigation Committee has been established to examine the matter thoroughly, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation,” Dr Mohtar said in a statement

“The Ministry of Health Malaysia is always committed to ensuring that all health care services are carried out in accordance with established standards and guidelines, and will not compromise on any form of non-compliance or practices that jeopardise patient safety and service quality.”

Berita Harian reported yesterday that the 27-year-old patient, Nurul Damia Asyiqin Ayub, claimed that negligence in the IUCD procedure caused a rupture in her womb and appendix, besides injuries in her small and large intestines.

The young woman, who has two children, claimed that she was told she could no longer give birth normally for the rest of her life.

Nurul Damia Asyiqin told Berita Harian that she plans to take legal action.
