Assunta Hospital Receives Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) Accreditation

Accredited in May 2025, Assunta joins the global network of BFHI-recognised hospitals that ensure every mother and baby receive optimal care.

PETALING JAYA, August 20 — Assunta Hospital has officially received accreditation under the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), making it one of Malaysia’s leading private hospitals recognised for promoting, supporting, and protecting breastfeeding.

The milestone was celebrated at the Jelajah MADANI BFHI Ceremony, officiated by Dr Ismuni Bohari, Deputy Director-General of Health (Public Health), Ministry of Health (MOH), together with Wilson Choo Voon Chee, CEO of Assunta Hospital, at the hospital’s Obstetrics & Gynaecology Centre.

Accredited in May 2025, Assunta joins the global network of BFHI-recognised hospitals that ensure every mother and baby receive optimal care. Established in 1954, Assunta has championed breastfeeding initiatives since 1992.

“This recognition is a historic milestone for Assunta Hospital after more than 70 years of service,” said Choo. “It reflects the teamwork and dedication of MOH, our doctors, nurses, lactation counselors, and hospital staff.”

The launch also spotlighted World Breastfeeding Week 2025 and its theme “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All”, aligning with Malaysia’s goal to ensure exclusive breastfeeding for six months and continued breastfeeding up to two years.

In his address, Dr Ismuni praised the hospital’s achievement: “With hospitals like Assunta leading the way, Malaysia moves closer to its national goal of improving maternal and child health outcomes while nurturing a healthier future generation.”

Following the ceremony, guests visited Assunta College of Nursing to celebrate its 100th student intake since its founding in 1961. Over the decades, the college has trained thousands of nurses who have contributed to maternal and child health nationwide — a legacy that complements Assunta Hospital’s ongoing efforts to provide quality care and breastfeeding support.

Assunta Hospital, a non-profit private institution, continues to strengthen its breastfeeding support systems through education, facilities, and community engagement, ensuring no mother feels unsupported on her breastfeeding journey.
