Chua was one of the recipients of MMA’s Gold Medal — the highest award of recognition bestowed on any individual, group or team, and organisation or institution.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the recipient of the first MMA Gold Medal, while Chua received the award in 2003.

MMA had a close working relationship with Chua during his time as health minister. Chua always showed a deep interest in issues concerning medical practitioners in the country.

Chua was the longest serving health minister, from 1995 to 2004. According to past MMA president Dr Milton Lum, “Chua valued and respected the medical profession’s views and positions”.
