KL Restaurant Cluster Found In Random Covid-19 Screening

Nine new Covid-19 cases were reported today, including five local transmissions.

KUALA LUMPUR, August 21 — A new Covid-19 cluster was reported today in Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur, after two restaurant workers and a customer tested positive for the virus.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) reported that the first two cases (Patient 9,176 and Patient 9,177) from the Maju cluster — detected on August 16 — were employees of a restaurant that were found positive from a random screening of restaurant and eatery workers around Kuala Lumpur.

Through close contact screening, a new case was detected today, a customer of that restaurant who had been experiencing symptoms of sore throat and headache since August 17.

So far, 672 individuals have been screened, including 16 workers and 656 customers. Three of them have tested positive, while 669 individuals have tested negative.

Nine new cases were recorded today, including five locally transmitted cases, bringing the total Covid-19 cases in Malaysia to 9,249.

Five locally transmitted cases were from the Tawar cluster (three cases), Maju cluster (one case), and one case in Sarawak.

The Tawar cluster has detected a total number of 58 Covid-19 cases across Kedah and Penang. As of 12pm today, 2,733 individuals have been screened, 58 tested positive, 2,426 tested negative, while 249 individuals are still waiting for their results.

The positive case recorded in Sarawak is a foreigner who was detected during a pre-departure screening.

Four imported cases were reported today, all involving foreigners returning from the Philippines (one case in Kuala Lumpur), Austria (one case in Kuala Lumpur), India (one case in Selangor), and Indonesia (one case in Selangor).

A total of 13 coronavirus patients were discharged from hospital today, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 8,945.

There are currently 179 active cases, including seven in the intensive care unit (ICU) and four patients on ventilator support.

No new death was recorded today and the total Covid-19 death toll stays at 125.
