Five New Covid-19 Cases, Three Sarawak Local Transmissions

The source of infection for three local cases in Sarawak is unknown, while Samarahan loses green status.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 — Authorities today reported five new Covid-19 cases, including three local transmissions in Sarawak whose source of infection was unknown.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) reported two new coronavirus cases in Kuching and one in Samarahan, leading to a total of 583 cases in Sarawak.

Sarawak’s Patient 581 was a foreign man working as a project engineer at a local company in Kuching, who experienced a sore throat on July 12 and tested positive for Covid-19 with the PCR test at a private hospital on July 14.

The second new case in Sarawak, Patient 582, was a Malaysian health care worker from a private hospital in Kuching, who did not display symptoms but tested positive for the coronavirus with the PCR test at a private hospital on July 14.

The third case reported today in Sarawak, Patient 583, was a local man living in Kota Samarahan who worked as an engineer at the same company as Patient 581. He did not have symptoms while undergoing screening at a private hospital, but tested positive for the coronavirus with the PCR test on July 14.

“All three cases are local transmissions because they did not have a history of visiting or returning from abroad. The three cases are still under investigation,” SDMC said in a statement.

With the detection of the one Covid-19 case, Samarahan district’s status has turned from green to yellow. Kuching also has yellow status, while the remaining districts are green, having reported zero new coronavirus cases in the past 14 days.

According to the federal Ministry of Health (MOH), today’s five new cases comprised one imported case involving a foreigner who entered Malaysia for business reasons, and four local transmissions.

Besides the three Sarawak cases, the fourth local transmission was a pre-surgery case in Sungai Buloh Hospital in Selangor.

No new deaths from the coronavirus were reported today, with the death toll remaining at 122.

Five Covid-19 patients are in intensive care, including one on ventilator support. Active infectious cases number 86.
