Columbia Asia Hospital – Bukit Rimau Partners With BCWA And KanWork To Enhance Cancer Patient Support

The collaborative effort between CAH-BR and BCWA is set to continue for three years, with volunteers conducting one-on-one support sessions tailored to meet the needs of each patient.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — In recognition of Cancer Survivors Month, Columbia Asia Hospital – Bukit Rimau (CAH-BR) has announced a new partnership with the Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA) through the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

This significant collaboration is aimed at providing emotional and moral support to cancer patients at the CAH-BR cancer centre. The volunteers, who are themselves cancer survivors, will connect with patients to offer their support and share their experiences.

The collaborative effort between CAH-BR and BCWA is set to continue for three years, with volunteers conducting one-on-one support sessions tailored to meet the needs of each patient.

These sessions, which can range from informal chats to structured counseling, are designed to help patients thrive beyond their diagnosis. Consent from patients’ families will be obtained to ensure a supportive and comfortable environment.

Additionally, volunteers from KanWork Cancer Society will be actively participating in this initiative.

Dr Zahrina Azian Zohadie and Norhaisnah Naian, the association’s representatives at the event are themselves cancer survivors, and will share their personal experiences and provide guidance to CAH-BR cancer patients.

Their sessions, known as “Sembang Survivor”, will be held monthly at the hospital and designed to offer emotional and spiritual support to patients, ensuring they receive comprehensive care throughout their treatment journey.

The MOU signing ceremony was graced by Jamaliah Jamaluddin, the Selangor State Health and Environment Exco. In her address, she highlighted the global impact of cancer and the importance of preventive measures and early detection.

“Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, with an estimated 10 million deaths each year. Around 70 per cent of these deaths occur in low- to middle-income countries.

“Remarkably, over 40 per cent of cancer-related deaths can be prevented through lifestyle changes and early detection. Today, as we celebrate Cancer Survivors Day, we honor those who have fought and survived cancer, acknowledging their resilience and strength,” she said.

“Since launching our Cancer Center in 2022, we have remained committed to advancing cancer advocacy and support,” she said further.

”The signing of this MoU marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to support cancer patients. This partnership aligns with our mission to provide comprehensive care and support to those affected by cancer,” said CAH-BR regional chief executive officer Lee Hui Chuen.
