Many Retailers Yet To Implement Tobacco Retail Display Ban: MCTC

MCTC says many retailers have yet to comply with a tobacco/vape retail display ban ahead of Oct 1 enforcement, as they haven't completed installing enclosed cabinets. MCTC suggests that MOH advise retailers to use cloth/canvas covers in the meantime.

The Malaysian Pharmacists Society's (MPS) Declaration Against Vape and Smoking calls for liquid nicotine to be reinstated into the Poisons Act, and for the tobacco/ vape GEG to be legislated. MPS also urges pharmacists to lead smoking cessation efforts.

Segamat MP R. Yuneswaran has called for a federal vape ban, after the government issued its first nicotine manufacturing licence to an e-cigarette company. Yuneswaran says MPs will push for this in the July Parliament meeting. Vape is legal under Act 852.

Pressure Mounts On MOH For Federal Vape Ban

Medical groups are pressuring MOH to impose a federal ban on vape sales. The Malaysian Thoracic Society and Lung Foundation Malaysia say Act 852 empowers the health minister to gazette an order prohibiting vape if there is an "acute or critical situation".

States Praised For Banning Vape That’s Legal At Federal Level

Anti-tobacco groups urge all states to ban the sale of vapes. Seven states (Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Selangor) have already banned or are open to banning vape sales. Putrajaya legalised nicotine vape in 2023 to tax e-liquids.

At least two KK Mart and myNEWS.com retail chain stores in KL are still displaying tobacco and vape products behind the counter today, despite a retail display ban on smoking products that came into effect yesterday (April 1).
