New Law Unnecessary, MMC Must Retain Independence: Johor DAP Committee Member

Johor DAP state committee member Dr Boo Cheng Hau dismisses the need for a new law to recognise the parallel pathway, saying MOHE/ MQA cannot interfere with the MMC's independence under the Medical Act in recognising specialist qualifications in medicine.

Parallel Pathway: Cabinet Memo On Bill Expected Soon, Parliament Tabling Date Uncertain

Fahmi Fadzil says today's Cabinet meeting made a decision on the parallel pathway issue, but another Cabinet memo on the bill itself, which he didn't specify, is expected soon. He adds the bill may be tabled in an upcoming or subsequent Parliament meeting.

Parallel Pathway ‘Highest Form Of Apprenticeship’: Ipoh Timor MP

Ipoh Timor MP Howard Lee describes the parallel pathway as the "highest form of apprenticeship", slamming the "monopolisation" of recognition and accreditation of local Master's programmes in medicine. He says both parallel pathway and Master's are needed.

Cabinet Discussed MQA-MMC Conflict In Parallel Pathway: Minister

Comms Minister Fahmi Fadzil says today's Cabinet meeting discussed the need to amend an unspecified Act or Acts in the parallel pathway issue. A Cabinet paper will be tabled next week. "The parallel pathway issue involves a conflict between MQA and MMC."

Lawyer: MMC Never Legally Designed To Be Independent From Government

At The Great Parallel Pathway Debate, lawyer New Sin Yew says MMC was never designed under the Medical Act to be independent of govt control. Section 8 shows "MOH has clear and effective control over MMC if it wants to. These two bodies should be aligned."

After July 2017, MMC Can’t Recognise New Qualifications Without Accreditation: Paediatric Surgeon

Paediatric surgeon Dr Dayang Anita says there's no problem with "old" parallel pathway programs accepted by MMC, but new ones set up post-2017 after the 2012 Medical Act amendment took effect, as it's these ones that need MMC accreditation and recognition.

UK GMC says it doesn't recognise the FRCS Edinburgh in Cardiothoracic Surgery qualification for specialist registration; only Intercollegiate exam is approved. GMC omits mentioning JSF exam, simply saying JSCFE and Intercollegiate exams aren’t equivalent.
