Investing In Nurses Is Investing In The Nation’s Health — Malaysian Medical Association

By strengthening job security, career development, and workload, we can retain more nurses, inspire more young Malaysians to join the profession, and ensure that patients continue to receive the best possible care.

The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) welcomes the government’s move to provide permanent positions for nurses. This is a positive step that gives our nurses the recognition and security they deserve for the vital role they play in patient care.

Nurses form the bedrock of patient care in our health system. They are with patients every step of the way, in hospitals and community clinics, delivering the largest share of direct care, supporting doctors and other health professionals, and often being the first point of contact for those seeking treatment.

Their compassion, resilience, and strength hold together the daily delivery of health care. Many carry a double burden, caring for patients with dedication while also managing their own families, often as mothers and caregivers, while navigating the bureaucracy of our system.

Their contributions deserve our deepest appreciation and respect.

By ensuring stability and a clear future for our nurses, the public will also benefit. A motivated nursing workforce means better continuity of care, shorter waiting times, and higher quality services for patients across the country.

But job security is only one pillar. To build a health care workforce that is sustainable and future-ready, we must also address career development and workload.

By strengthening all three pillars, we can retain more nurses, inspire more young Malaysians to join the profession, and ensure that patients continue to receive the best possible care.

Nurses are the backbone of our health care system. By investing in them, the government is truly investing in the health of the nation.

The MMA urges continued and sustained investment in our health human resources, because a resilient health care system depends first and foremost on its people.

This statement was issued by MMA president Dr R. Arasu.
