Pointless Keeping HSA Fire Report Secret, Says Khairy

Khairy Jamaluddin says he’s seeking legal advice on when to publish the independent inquiry’s report on the 2016 fire disaster at Sultanah Aminah Hospital that killed six patients.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 3 – Khairy Jamaluddin maintained today that the Ministry of Health (MOH) would not withhold an independent inquiry’s findings on the deadly 2016 fire at Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru Hospital (HSA).

The health minister promised to publish the report after seeking legal advice on when to make it public.

“My intention is to table the report. There is no point in keeping it classified,” Khairy told a press conference today, in response to CodeBlue’s question on whether he would table the report in the current Parliament meeting.

“It is just a matter of time as to when it’s appropriate for publication.”

The independent investigation headed by former Court of Appeal judge Mohd Hishamudin Yunus into the deadly 2016 blaze at HSA revealed that the public health care facility had been operating for years without a fire certificate since 2002.

A total of six patients were killed in the fire tragedy on October 25, 2016 at the MOH hospital’s south intensive care unit (ICU) ward.

The inquiry found that none of the south ICU staff had undergone any training in fire drills or emergency evacuation before the 2016 fire disaster, according to reportage by CodeBlue that sighted the report.
