Malaysia Reports 489 Covid-19 Cases, Penang Prison Cluster

Over half of total reported cases today were sporadic community cases in Sabah, whereas more than a quarter of today’s cases belong to the Tembok cluster in Kedah.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — The Ministry of Health (MOH) recorded 489 new Covid-19 cases today, marking a decrease after two consecutive days of rising infections to 691 infections yesterday.

Two new clusters were reported today — one in a Penang prison and the other across Perak and Selangor.

That brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country to 13,993. Of the newly recorded cases, 487 were local transmissions and the balance two were imported cases from India and Maldives.

A total of 259 cases, or 52.97 per cent from the total reported cases today, were unlinked community cases in Sabah whose sources of transmission were unknown, whereas 139 cases, or 28.42 per cent of the total cases, were registered under the Tembok cluster in a prison in Alor Star, Kedah.

Sabah remains the most affected state in the country with a total of 3,020 Covid-19 cases so far since the coronavirus hit Malaysia last January; Sabah yesterday overtook Kuala Lumpur as the state with the highest number of cumulative cases.

Penang’s new Penjara Reman cluster was identified in Timur Laut district. The index case (Patient 13,499) was an 85-year-old Malaysian who died on October 5 (Death 141). He was found unconscious and pronounced dead at Penang Hospital. A Covid-19 screening was conducted on the same day and the deceased was positively detected.

Following that, another six Covid-19 patients were identified through a close contact screening. As of today, a total of 286 individuals have been screened and 78 individuals have tested negative for the coronavirus, while 201 individuals are still waiting for the test results.

New Bah Puchong Cluster

The Bah Puchong cluster was another new cluster which was identified in a few districts from two states — Perak and Selangor.

In Selangor, the cluster was found in Petaling whereas in Perak the cluster was found in Larut, Matang, Selama and Kinta districts. This cluster has three index patients — Patient 13,061, Patient 13,065, and Patient 13,069 who had previous travel history to Sabah.

A close contact screening has revealed two more cases in this cluster. So far, Selangor has recorded three positive cases in this cluster while Perak recorded two positive cases. A total of 34 individuals are still waiting for the test result in these states.

Sabah (282 New Cases)

Of the 259 unlinked community cases in Sabah, 183 cases were identified through a community screening and 71 cases through symptomatic screening. Two cases were found in a screening before getting admitted into a hospital, while a referral screening, pre surgical screening and detainee screening registered one case each.

The state detected 22 cases from a close contact screening two cases from the Laut cluster.

Kedah (153 New Cases)

In Kedah, besides the Tembok cluster with 139 new cases, the Bah Sintok cluster has registered 14 new Covid-19 cases.

Selangor (19 New Cases)

In Selangor, the Selasih cluster recorded one case who had Sabah travel history. The Jalan Meru cluster registered four cases, whereas Benteng PK cluster has two cases. A case was found under the Embun cluster.

A total of six new Covid-19 cases in Selangor had Sabah travel history, while another three cases were detected in a symptomatic screening. A close contact to a Covid-19 patient was also tested positive in the state. Another person who voluntarily underwent a screening was also detected with the coronavirus in Selangor.

Penang (Seven New Cases)

Besides the Reman prison cluster with six new Covid-19 cases, another case was detected in a close contact screening of a coronavirus patient.

Johor (Six New Cases)

The Selasih cluster registered one case in Johor and the balance five cases in the state had travelled to Sabah previously.

Perak (Four New Cases)

Besides the Bah Puchong cluster in Perak with two new cases, two more cases were detected in the state from a close contact screening and screening of Sabah returnees.

Terengganu (Four New Cases)

Terengganu today registered one unlinked community case, which was detected in a symptomatic screening. The state has two cases from a close contact screening and one case who had Sabah travel history.

Kuala Lumpur (Three New Cases)

In Kuala Lumpur, two community cases were detected through a pre-surgical screening and pre-wedding screening, while the third case was screened before entering Sarawak.

Sarawak (Three New Cases)

Two returnees from Sabah were positively detected in Sarawak, whereas another case tested positive in the airport.

Pahang (Two New Cases)

Pahang’s two new cases were detected in a screening before leaving abroad and a pre-surgical screening.

Putrajaya (Two New Cases)

Putrajaya’s two Covid-19 cases were identified through a close contact screening and a screening before being admitted into a hospital.

Negri Sembilan And Kelantan (One Case Each)

Negeri Sembilan and Kelantan recorded one Covid-19 case each. The cases were identified in a pre-surgical screening in Negeri Sembilan and a close contact screening in Kelantan.

Malaysia’s recovered Covid-19 patients stand at 10,501, including the 74 patients who have been discharged today.

At the same time, active cases have been increased to 3,351 in the country. A total of 40 Covid-19 patients are receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, with 13 under ventilator support.

The Covid-19 death toll remains at 141 as no new death was reported today.
