Woman, Her Treating Doctor Contract Covid-19 In New Semporna Cluster

MOH reported 21 new Covid-19 cases today, including five imported infections.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 — The Ministry of Health (MOH) today reported a new coronavirus cluster in Semporna, Sabah, among 21 fresh cases reported nationwide.

The index patient (Patient 9,969) of the Selamat cluster was a 32-year-old Malaysian woman who tested positive on September 14. She was identified during a screening at Tawau Hospital for premature birth and the medical officer who treated her also contracted coronavirus.

As of today, a total of 118 individuals have been screened in this cluster. The balance 116 individuals are still waiting for their test results. The source of infection in the Selamat cluster is still under investigation.

MOH also identified two new cases under the Benteng Lahad Datu cluster in Sabah, bringing the total number of Covid-19 cases in the cluster to 474, with 142 cases in Lahad Datu and 332 cases in Tawau. Of them, 215 individuals are Malaysians and 259 are foreign nationals from the Philippines and Indonesia.

As of today, a total of 7,670 individuals have been screened in this cluster. Two cases were identified in Lahad Datu and Tawau each. In Lahad Datu, 1,306 people tested negative while 421 are still waiting for the test results.

In Tawau, 3,052 individuals tested negative for the coronavirus and 2,417 individuals are still waiting for the test result.

In the Sungai cluster, six new cases have been reported in Kedah today, bringing the total number of positive cases in this cluster to 65.

As of today, a total of 22,317 individuals have been screened in this cluster in Kedah, Penang and Perlis.

A total of 64 cases have been reported in Kedah and one case in Perlis, while Penang did not report any cases in this cluster. A total of 19,744 people tested negative in this cluster and 2,508 individuals are still waiting for the test results.

The total screening in this cluster includes 1,148 health workers; a total of 26 health personnel tested positive for Covid-19.

MOH recorded five locally transmitted Covid-19 community cases in the country, including a Public Works Department (JKR) employee whose case was listed in Sarawak (she was tested upon arrival at Kuching International Airport). Two cases were found in Sabah during an admission screening in Tawau hospital and a sign-off screening at Sipitang Port. Another person tested positive with Covid-19 during a symptomatic screening in Sungai Buloh Hospital in Selangor. A case in Kedah was detected in a screening at an area under the administrative Enhanced Movement Control Order.

Two family members of Patient 9,397 were found positive in Penang. Of the total 21 Covid-19 cases today, five imported cases were found among returnees from India, New Zealand, Pakistan and China. That brings the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country to 10,052 with 674 active cases.

A total of 15 patients were discharged today, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 9,250.

So far, 13 patients are receiving treatment in the intensive care unit with two under ventilator support. The death toll related to Covid-19 in the country remains at 128.
