Jakarta Extends Emergency, After Indonesian Capital Records 675 Coronavirus Cases

The new extension will see the emergency ending on April 19.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 – Jakarta has extended its state of emergency by two weeks to fight the increasing cases of Covid-19 that surpassed 1,200.

“The state of emergency in Jakarta was prolonged from the initial end of April 5 to April 19,” Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said, according to Xinhua/ Asian News Network. 

Jakarta has the highest number of cases in the country at 675. Indonesia has recorded a total of 1,285 Covid-19 infections and 114 deaths, according to official data.

Jakarta’s state of emergency commenced on March 20 and was expected to end on April 5.

The government has hired 5,816 people from medical and non-medical sectors, mostly from Jakarta, to fight the pandemic. 

Apart from that, Papua has shut down its airports, sea ports and land borders for 14 days to stop the virus spread, and AirAsia Indonesia is also working to temporarily stop flights across the country on April 1.
