US Has Largest Number Of Reported Covid-19 Cases Worldwide

The US is the new epicenter of the global pandemic.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 28 — As of Friday, the number of people confirmed with Covid-19 in the United States reached 101,000, making it the country with the largest number of cases in the world. 1,588 people have died, according to CNN.

The US now surpasses China in terms of number of known Covid-19 cases.

New York City and Washington DC have quickly become hot spots. More than half of existing US cases are located in the metropolitan New York area. However, infections have quickly spread to different parts of the country, with cities preparing convention centres to house thousands of patients.

Friday saw the largest number of deaths due to Covid-19 in a single day, with 402 deaths reported.

The first case of coronavirus was reported in the US two months ago, and it now has become the new epicenter of the global pandemic.

Cities such as Chicago and New Orleans are seeing increasingly more cases each day. Health officials are saying that they don’t have enough medical resources.

Severe shortages of personal protection equipment (PPEs) and medical equipment such as ventilators have been reported. In one instance, nurses were told to use a surgical mask for five days.

Almost half of the US population of 330 million have been told to stay home or restrict their movements to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

US President Donald Trump signed a historic $2 trillion stimulus package yesterday, which includes providing financial assistance to individuals and families, expansion of unemployment benefits and support for small businesses. More than 3.3 million people have already filed for unemployment benefits.

Trump also invoked the Defense Production Act which compels General Motors to increase production of ventilators to meet raising demand due to the outbreak.

He has been widely criticised for not taking the spread of Covid-19 seriously and failing to act fast enough.

Globally, more than 25,000 people have died from Covid-19 and more than half a million people have been infected thus far. In the past 24 hours, Spain and Italy announced around 2,000 deaths.
