Congratulations, Minister, Deputy Ministers Of Health — MMA

The need to strengthen the 7,000 MOH-trained GPs as gatekeepers in our health care system is timely.

The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) wishes to congratulate Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba on his appointment as Health Minister and Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali and Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang as Deputy Health Ministers.

Both Datuk Seri Adham and Datuk Dr Noor Azmi are trained doctors and have served in our healthcare system. We believe this will be a plus point and beneficial in policy making of our nation’s health care.

The appointment of two deputy health ministers may be seen as the priority given to this ministry.

The handling of the Covid-19 situation in the country, the issues of contract officers and the welfare of the health care workers are the urgent areas that will need to be addressed.

It is also hoped that the health ministry under the new leadership will look into more allocation of funds for the public health care and the sustainability of our nation’s health care.

The public-private initiatives that complement each sector should also be an area of priority for the betterment of the health system. The need to strengthen the 7,000 MOH-trained GPs as gatekeepers in our health care system is timely.

The rising cost of health care for serious illnesses is also a huge concern for the rakyat.

Some of the good policies such as the smoking ban at restaurants and eateries should also be continued.

Dr N. Ganabaskaran is president of the Malaysian Medical Association.
