Man Dies Near Finish Line in Sabah Race

The runner was sent to hospital at 8.58am, more than an hour after he fainted at about 7.45am.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 — A 56-year-old man collapsed as he neared the finish line at a 10km race in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, yesterday.

The Star reported that Bitah Sabenting was declared dead on arrival at Hospital Queen Elizabeth 2 after his collapse at the Borneo International Marathon at Likas Stadium.

Police were quoted saying that Bitah was sent to hospital at 8.58am yesterday, more than an hour after he reportedly fainted at about 7.45am. He was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

He and his family had reportedly travelled from Kota Belud to join the race.

Police have classified the case as sudden death.
